'Can' Do

While engaged to be married, the cowboy and I often talked about moving to the farm. I always made sure I laid all my cards out on the table; I wasn't exactly excited about the idea of becoming a farm wife (in the middle of nowhere, hours from a Starbucks). I was adamant about helping him to understand that I didn't know the first thing about rural life, or desire to do "farm wife things." He always assured me that he didn't love me because I was Laura Ingalls Wilder, but he loved me because of who I am and what I would bring to our marriage (I wonder if he would take back that statement now?:) When we moved, I resolved in my mind that I wasn't going to change, I was going to be 'urban girl' on the farm despite all the pressure I might feel to assimilate. I wasn't going to churn butter, wake up early in the morn' and do chores, and I wasn't under any circumstances going to can food! (I mean really, how fun can it be, look at how sad that lady looks)

And I stood my ground.

Even if deep inside I wanted to learn 'farm' things.

Nope.

I am NOT going to change.

Canning would sure be nice to do though.

Nope.......no.........must......not....... change...

What I am I going to do with all these apples.....pears...tomatoes?

Um....Hmmm...

A dear friend invited me over to can, and to be honest I was tripping over myself excited! (Plus it was awesome company) Oh how far I've come! By opening myself up to a new world, I have grown leaps and bounds as person. I am learning that change does not mean giving up who you are but allowing God to grow you into who He wants you to be. Most of my life I have wanted to do the opposite of what others are doing, but sometimes God wants us to learn from others. Paul tells the women of the church in Titus 2 to actually learn from other women; learn how to love our husbands, love our children and to be workers at home. And it's ok to do as others do...even agrarian things! (Yes, I am a slow learner).

We had such a great time! It was amazing to prepare the food and store it, knowing it will be available for my family.

Now I find myself looking at all the foods that can be canned and buying things so I'm able to can. I am totally geeking out about it! (On a side note: I've also learned how to knit these past couple of months ..holla!)

Thank you Kristen for a great time, you are a blessing!

Thank you Lord for knowing what I need more than I

That does sound like fun. I'd love to learn sometime how to can - Anthony's grandparents are crazy about it.

I was learning how to crochet before Laura moved. I'm hoping to pick it up again sometime.

I used to can applesauce and peaches. I don't have time anymore. There are several dozen canning jars in my attic I should drop off at the flea market for someone to sell.

Now, girl!!

Another thing we have in common...I'm a canner too! In fact, I have a post that has been in my "working on" pile for like, 3 weeks about this very subject!

This year,I did: 32 quarts of green beans, 7 quarts of peaches, countless quarts of tomatoes/crushed tomatoes/diced tomatoes/spaghetti sauce, and we haven't even made it to apple/pumpkin season (for my special RED HOT apple sauce and apple and pumpkin butter) yet!

You go girl...it is such a sense of satisaction, isn't it? I love it too!

Thanks for your comment! I have always wanted the farm life but instead we are living the rural small town life in AZ. We do have a horse and a half though! (one is a mini)
Do you live in NE? I was born and have family in Fremont and I have a sister in Lincoln too.
Well, thanks for stopping by
